Lenten Reader | Day 18

Bread of Life

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

John 6:43-51
Does your life ever feel empty or without purpose? Do your thoughts tear you down and make you doubt what you are filling your time with? Life is busier and busier as we grow and have more and more responsibility. Maybe you have heard 1 Corinthians 10:13 – the verse reminding us God will not tempt us with more than we can handle. He won’t. But do we put more on our plate than we can handle?

Yelp! That hit home. Even with the best of intentions I have overwhelmed myself by being a “yes” person. I’m not saying I want to be a “no” person, but I do want to be a person that says, “let me ask Jesus.”

Jesus desires to be the bread of our life: the one that fills us, the one we crave to have more of. He is the only one that will never fail us, shame, or judge us. Do you get as excited to spend time with Jesus as you do about watching your favorite sports team? Do you fill your life up with things that take all your time but neglect to spend time with the Lord?

Just as bread is given, broken, and shared to sustain physical life, Jesus was given, broken, and taken to share spiritual life with all that accept Him.

Pray with me – Jesus, help me in making the changes I need to let You be the one that has full direction of my life. I desire eternal life through You. Amen
