Lenten Reader | Day 25

If I Don't Have Love
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
Having love is impressed on us repeatedly in Scripture. We are taught the fruit of the spirit at an early age, with all the fruit being built on the foundation of love. Paul tells us, “the most important thing in life is love.” We are commanded to love the Lord our God, love one another, and love our neighbor. Sometimes as we age, we forget the simplest message.
What is our motivation in life? Is it to be seen by others as doing all the right things? Is it our quest to gain knowledge to impress, to be the best at a sport for praise, to be seen serving to be recognized?
There is nothing wrong with wanting success in life. God wants us to prosper, to share with others, to have joy in life. It is easy to get caught up and lose focus. Often, I start off overly ambitiously thinking the more I do the more acceptance I will gain when the truth is often the time spent just listening to someone is the most loving thing I can do. The Chosen has been an eye opener for me when it comes to just listening, watching most recently the faces of the crowds gathered to hear what Jesus had to say.
Keeping in mind in order to love someone I do not have to agree with everything they say or believe can be tough. It is not our place to judge; it is our place to love. We are God’s children, and if you have raised a child or are raising a child, there are times of arguing. But one thing that is constant is your love for your child. God’s love is greater than any love we can fathom, yes that can be hard to process when thinking of my own earthly love.
I am not a writer or a deep thinker, but I know I feel blessed when I am doing things for the right reason and with love in my heart.
