Lenten Reader | Day 30
Filled With Joy
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.
Our mouths were filled with laughter,
our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
The Lord has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy.
Restore our fortunes, Lord,
like streams in the Negev.
Those who sow with tears
will reap with songs of joy.
Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.
- Psalm 126

Let’s face it. We are not always filled with joy. But the Scriptures tell us that with God we can be! Our lives are a series of ups and downs, mountains and valleys. So, we ask, “when we are in the valleys how do we still have joy”?
Psalm 126 is a message of HOPE for us. This is a song that looks back to when the Jews returned to Jerusalem following their captivity in Babylon. They had lived 70 years through very hard times. They were able to have joy by remembering that the Lord had done great things for them.
In the deepest, darkest, and most sorrowful times you are unable to look forward and see good, but you can look back at what God has done and have hope. You need to not just think about it, but marvel at what God has already done for you. You can then look to the future with joy knowing that God will continue to do great things. He has not left you. He will turn your sorrow to joy and your tears to laughter. You can trust God to do great things again for you.
“He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him” (Psalm 126:6). Even in your times of great sorrow and heavy trials there is work to be done, and that good work will bear fruit in your life. God sees all your tears and He knows all your pain. He can still use you and will still work in your life.
So, what do you do in your deepest valley? Marvel at what God has done in your past. Trust God to do it again. Pray for full restoration and blessings. Know that God will turn your sorrow into joy. Commit yourself to the Lord and do good.

Prayer
Father, thank you for the wonderful things you have done in my life. I praise you for them. Help to remember them in the difficult time and to remember that your promises are eternal.
