Lenten Reader | Day 20

Kingdom of God

Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”

Again he asked, “What shall I compare the kingdom of God to? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.”

- Luke 13:18-21
The Kingdom of God is living and breathing and will grow. In our passage we see that Jesus has an opportunity to compare his Father’s Kingdom to anything and He chose two distinct and yet very effective ways to explain His Kingdom.

In both of His examples, He chose living things to compare the Kingdom of God. One living thing is a very tiny seed that grows tall. In the other, He uses an example of one of the tiniest living organisms that exist in the form of bacteria in yeast.

It takes years for a mustard seed to grow into a tree where birds can perch in its branches. Also, it takes quite a bit of time to work yeast through 60 pounds of flour. God is teaching us that His Kingdom is a living, breathing thing. Also, He is trying to tell us that the tiny living thing that is powered by God will continue to grow.

Just recently I learned some amazing facts about yeast. I must have heard this before and forgot or skipped that class in school. In learning about yeast, I have been enlightened to say the least. Yeast is amazing. Really cool stuff. I even learned that yeast is actually living and breathing!

I even heard you can put ‘them’ in the septic tank to get rid of some of the waste. Yeast is actually a tiny organism that feed off of sugar, and when their tiny bellies get full, they burp out carbon dioxide, making the bread rise. So interesting to me. God is so creative. His Kingdom is ALIVE!

Prayer
Father, may your kingdom come. Let it spread out like a mustard seed. Let it permeate everything like yeast. Thank you that your kingdom is alive!
